As I sat and watched the evening news, a news break appeared informing the public that an earthquake that just occurred in our neighborhood region of Boston and southern Maine and New Hampshire areas. After hearing that, I had thought to myself that my home insurance doesn’t have coverage for earthquakes. Then again, why should it have for we’ve never had earthquakes in the area before? Well, it now seems that since this was the third or fourth occasion that the tremors took place relatively close to home, that it doesn’t seem like such a bad idea after all. So, while I was thinking of my own home insurance, I also thought that I should inform my customers of the same dilemma that I face as well. I had logged into my Facebook account (great way to be touch with customers by the way) and when I finished typing my messages, two things had occurred. One, I had a couple of customers that thought the idea of earthquake coverage was a good one, for you never know. Another had thought that I might as well add all the rest the possible catastrophes to their homeowners insurance while I was at it. “What a salesman!” Oh boy, that was not what I was setting out to do. But you know, there was a point to that statement. I’ve heard many times in the insurance industry, “Insurance is a cure for paranoia” and it certainly seems to be. However, the paranoid side of me cannot get comfortable with the possibility of having to write out a check for the full amount of anything that I could have gotten coverage for. Everything is just too expensive to replace to do that. So, be it.
So, for now we can thank the weather gods for having been kind to us and not devastating the area with a high magnitude earthquake. We can also laugh and chuckle about all the pictures of overturned garbage cans and plastic outdoor chairs that had postings of “We shall survive”. But, as funny as this seems, my advice to you is to take this opportunity as being a small nudge to check your coverage on both your homeowners insurance and your auto insurance, just to make sure you are covered for all the little paranoia. So, if and when something actually does occur, you can rest a little easier for you won’t have to write that check since you will be covered.
